A few years ago the Milwaukee Art Museum added on a major addition to their facility, hiring Santiago Calatrava to construct a building for their stunning location on the shoreline of Lake Michigan.
The wings on the addition move — during the day, when the wind conditions are acceptable the wings spread out like a bird in flight; they do a little dance to music when being raised or lowered, and when closed they shroud the peaked atrium like armor.
Some time ago I wanted to shoot the Calatrava in it’s less popular “pose” — with the wings collapsed. Â And this is what it looks like.
