Dry Dock 05

Season’s end. The workhorse of the harbor has been removed from Lake Superior, repairs have been made, and she sits patiently waiting for the onslaught of winter, and the only too long wait till spring when once again this old girl can get back to doing her favorite — pushing other boats around with attitude.

In Search of Breakfast

Posted in photos by Peter on 9, August 2008

I tiny boat, silhouetted against the sunrise, on his way out in search of breakfast.

There’s a special light in the early morning and early evening that can’t be mimicked. And a special quiet to the world in those early hours before the rest of the world get around to moving about and getting their work done.

Some of my best friends are nightowls who rise late and stay up most of the night. But I’ve never been one of them. There’s nothing quite like an early morning walk along the water.

I can hear the metallic clank of the rigging

The sight of a harbor full of sailboats brings with it the sound of metallic clinking in the rigging as the boats rest at their moorings. It’s not the sound of breathing. It’s the beating of the harbor’s collective heart; waiting for the skippers to come aboard and bring the sleeping craft to life with the breath of the wind.

A Tug Out of Water

Days 17 & 18 post-op have been good days for dad.

I’m an eternal optimist but I must admit that he was having so many little setbacks that it was iffy how or whether he would have enough sheer will to live to get over what would have been a difficult surgery for someone 30 years younger than his 85.

He is now finally off oxygen — including the moisturized air he was getting to soothe his parched mouth — I have decided that being a mouth-breather is definately a bad thing.

Speaking and being heard is a bit of a problem for him. So little air volume means just a little air through his voicebox and ears pressed close to his head to hear. But he’s got a good attitude and he’s a fighter.

In the meantime I hope do the 50/50 commute. A week at his place and a week back home shooting. Not the most efficient use of time, gas, or resources — but one has to do what they have to do.

Thanks to all my clients and models who are being understanding during this blip in human history.

With luck I’ll get this blog back on track and do a better job posting.
